Q.

Who to go to

Hi My 6 year old daughter has been diagnosed with a an auditory processing problem and ADD by a neuro-developmental pediatrician. She is at a remedial school and we have now decided to try medication for the attention problems. The school has suggested a child psychiatrists but I have two glowing personal recommendations about an ordinary physiatrist, who sees their children. One of the recommendations comes from a highly regarded speech therapist the other a Mother. Should I go to the older professor who is a child psychiatrist because she specializes in children and had her own child with a learning problem or the psychiatrist who a man and is younger but I have personal recommendations .

Dear Aine,

Why not go to the pediatrician who made the diagnosis for the medication? S/he will already have all your daughter's details on file and will be in a good position to monitor changes in behaviour as s/he presumably did an in-depth evaluation to come to a diagnosis of ADHD.

To answer your question of which psychiatrist: go to the one who has the most experience with ADHD in children. I will also state that it is imperative that you and your daughter feel comfortable with the psychiatrist; the best in the world will not be effective if you are not comfortable.

Best wishes,
Delia
