Q.

Who is most qualified to make the diagnosis

Hi Delia
My 7 year old daughter has just been diagnosed with ADHD (with a susoected touch of Dyslexia) by an educational psychologist. Her OT and paediatrician also suspected she might have it, yet when I took her to Bergit Schlegel last year she did not diagnose ADHD??

My question is, who at the end of the day is MOST qualified to diagnose ADHD - surely it should be a child psychiatrist (given the medication implications)? Would an educational psychologist be qualified?

Tx so much.

Dear D,

This is a very difficult topic and your frustration is evident and understandable. All the professionals you have mentioned can diagnose ADHD; the one you choose to continue seeing depends on your preferred method of treatment.

There are a number of advantages and disadvantages. For example, a psychiatrist can prescribe medications, however, for families who do not wish to got he medication route, this may be an uncomfortable environment; in this situation, seeking non medical treatment from a psychologist would be more beneficial.

The bottom line, is to take all the opinions from all the different professionals and look at their recommendations and see which one(s) fit in with your views. The very fact that you have had your daughter seen by a number of professionals seems to indicate that you have a concern.

Remember that the label is not important, the treatment and/or management is to ensure your daughter is able to cope with schooling and social interactions and has an overall healthy state of mind.

Best wishes,
Delia
