Hi Arlene,

This could just be a passing interest and may be completely normal, particularly as it has only lasted for a short period. It does however sound a little obsessional, and obsessive compulsive behaviours can occur with ADHD. I would suggest that you take action only if it starts to interfere with normal functioning, for example, he wont go out and play, or do his homework because he has to count something first - that is, is he becoming obsessed with counting? If this starts to happen I would suggest that you see a child neurologist who would be able to assess him and alter the medication dosage if necessary.

Arlene, my son was also diagnosed with ADHD when he was
6, I was advised by the doctors, pyscotherapists etc to put on
Ritalin, which I refused to do, I used herbal remedies and also encouraged him to play sport, sports did the trick for me.
He is 11 now and sports is the answer for me, after reading the
side effects of Ritalin and also seeing his classmates that were on it I refused to go down that line, and I also had to have a lot of patience with him, I am happy my son is a normal over energtic boy..also Brilliant in Maths!!!!
All the best

thanks for your comments Neri - glad your son is better. I have never been a fan of Ritalin....I went to 4 sepcialists before agreeing to put him on Ritalin, they all said it was necessary. I must admit that besides the counting, its probably the best decision i made!! i am just hoping there is a way around this counting thing other than taking him off.

keep well and many thanks again.

Arlene, if u think him counting buttons and peas was bad, what would say about my son sitting on the school bench during his break and counting all the birds flying in thesky? I was shocked when he told me this. My son is 8, and after him telling me this i observed him closely and finally took him off Ritalin. He is so much better without it cos the side-effects were more than what we as a family could handle. When i approached his dr about this he said its fine, cos he is thinking logically and is not like the 'village idiot' when he takes his tabs, but to me he was more like the 'village idiot ' when he was on it, to an extent where he was biting his toe nails. He did these things only when the tabs had taken effect. When he was off it he was absolutely fine. My friends son actually used to bark like a dog when he was on Ritalin.
