Q.

Sensitive Child after Birth

I have a 4yr old boy who is extremely energetic &  cannot sit still for a minute. He use to be a fun loving child, very spirited, sociable &  loved being around other children, especially! He was always HAPPY. He is extremely attached to me. Will never stay apart from me!
I gave birth 3weeks ago, and was in hospital for 3nts. Since then, it seems as if he''s whole personality has changed. He is overly energetic, doesn''t seem to listen to anything...seems to be extra naughty just to get attention.
I realise that its not easy for him now (havin a lil sister), so I have been giving him extra time &  attention, yet it seems he still is affected somehow! It breaks my heart as all we do is shout and punish him all the time, as he constantly does naughty and improper things. He also has become somewhat eccentric. Makes awful animal noises, behaves like an animal. He constantly talks about monsters &  aliens. But he does not seem HAPPY any more. There is no longer a sparkle in his eyes! He seems sad, and has also become somewhat defiant. Fortunately he hasn''t dispalyed any negative behaviour towards his new sister. I''ve also decided to change his creche from half day to a creche that offers fullday. I''m soo worried that all this change in his life is going to damage him further! What do I do... I miss my fun-loving happy boy! *tears*

Dear BAS,

I would suggest posting your query to the Cybershrink as this does not appear to have anything with ADHD, but rather a little boy who is finding it difficult to adjust to his new role as big brother. Alternatively, taking him to a play therapist may assist as it is very difficult for a little one of 4 years old to express his thoughts and feelings verbally.

Best wishes,
Delia
