Please Help!

I really need help with my 4 Year 7 month old son.

I do not want to label my child as a problem child but how do I know if he have ADHD? He does not listen to me, gets aggressive and moody, will through a tantrum if he does not get his way. At his school he does not concentrate for very long, do not like playing in a group or do work in a group.

Can someone please advice me where can I get him tested or is it to early? He is supposed to go to Grade R next year but I do not want to send him if he will not cope. I’  m staying in the “  platteland”  and Bloemfontein is the nearest big town.

Dear Rindie,
It is not too early to diagnose your son; there are now guidelines to determine the probability of ADD and ADHD in children a year old. I wonder if you have spoken to your paediatrician about your concerns? S/he can do a preliminary assessment and refer you to an educational psychologist or neurologist in your area. The options available to you may include medication, a change in diet, occupational therapy to name a few. Please consider all the options prior to making a decision; it is not advisable to put a child below the age of 6 years onto medications such as Ritalin.
All the best,

I truly feel sorry for you. No, it' s not to early to detect if he has ADHD. My son just turned 4 and was diagnosed. He' s turning 6 in a few days time and I have to say, with the correct dose of medication they do become better. My son is today one of the top students in his Grade R class and the teachers love him. I' ll to try to see where we can find a paeditrician in your area. Just know, that adapting to a child with ADHD is a whole change of life style. Be prepared and open minded. Good Luck and please feel free to contact me.
