Q.

Natural/herbal medicine and ADD

My son was diagnosed to be ADD after a 5 minutes evaluation. Yes the signs are there but i strongly believe he''ll mature as the years go by as he was born pre-mature, 32 weeks, 1,8kg so as a result his development is behind. He is currently on Rietalin and does not want to eat at all when he is on it. He takes 3 spoons(forced) of cereal before going to school and everyday returns with his lunch box still full, i somethimes pack junk food(chips) hoping he''ll eat those as they are his favourites, but he doesn''t. Is there any natural medication that you can recommend as i hate the Ritalin with all my heart and he is a Zombie when he is on it, he doesn''t get all excited when seeing Mum approach. He is just still while other kids are bubbly and playing. He is ADD without the Hyperactiveness.

Dear CaringMa,

There are natural alternatives, the most common being ADDvance, Biostrath and EyeQ. Alternatively, omegas 3 and 6 are beneficial as well as B vitamins and vitamin E.

The side effects you are describing are common, please remember to weigh up whether the side effects or the benefits of the medication are higher to help you make an informed decision.

Kind regards,
Delia
