Q.

does my child have ADD?

Hi Doctor. My son is 20 months old and is very very active. As a baby he was very good and till this day he sleeps well, but I am worried. People are telling me he is too energetic and he has ADD. He has already had 2 bad accidents and was admitted into hospital. He hardly sits and listens. Not even for 5 minutes. He will never sit still if I take him somewhere. He is not too interested in toys. He does however play alone sometimes and loves to watch TV. Not speaking yet either. He says about 5 words. He is on the go the whole time. He also prefers running to walking. Please advise me as to what to do.

Dear Very Worried Mom,

I would suggest taking your little one to see a pediatric neurologist to have an assessment done. It would be very beneficial to bring along all inoculation details, full medical history of both mom and dad as well as a record - as best you can remember - of when he started to sit, crawl, babble etc. as the doctor is likely to request this information.

I am not sure which area you are in but there is a wonderful neurologist in Pretoria by the name of Dr MM Lippert (012 664 6914). Alternatively, ask your GP to recommend someone - (please stress the importance of pediatric).

Best wishes,
Delia
