Q.

Behaviour problems

Hi There

My Daughter is 9 years old and has a concentration problem. When studying for tests she can hardly sit and study for 5 minutes then she get distracted dispite that her marks are still fairly good. She also tell us that she does not have homework but afterwards we find the notes from the teacher in her books that her homework was not done. She is very jealous of her sister witch is 5 years old and does not complete tasks witch we give her. Is it ADD or just a behaviour problem?

Dear J.C,

Without a complete assessment it is very difficult to give a diagnosis. However, regardless of whether it is ADHD or a behaviour problem, the behaviour needs to be addressed to keep her marks where they should be, instill a good work ethic and save sibling relationships.

At 9 tears old a reward system works very well, either a star chart or a record of behaviour with a reward at the end of the week etc. I would suggest you work with the school to show your daughter that you are all on the same page and she cannot manipulate the system.

Kind regards,
Delia
