Q.

ADHD/sensory integration?

Hi. I have a very loud, bright, impulsive, strong-willed and hyperactive 6 year old daughter. She is currently in Grade 1 and her teacher is concerned that she is struggling to focus/is easily distracted which slows her task performance. We had her assessed (and is being treated for) by an OT who disgnosed her as having sensory integration problems ie is high sensation seeking ala Annamarie Lombard. (She has also had physio for low muscle tone). She was assessed last year for ADHD and although she was borderline, Bergit Schlegel did not diagnose her as ADHD.
However her current Gr 1 teacher is not convinced and suggests that we have her comprehensively assessed (IQ/play therapy etc) by an educational psychologist. I had severe PND (and indeed am still being treated for depression) when she was born which had an effect on the bonding process however we have a good relationship now although we struggle with her on the discipline front because of her impulsivity.

Is there often an overlap btw sensory integration disorder and ADHD. Who should we have her assessed by?
Thank you.

Dear D,

ADHD and Sensory Integration Disorder do often overlap; unfortunately, sometimes it is very difficult to determine whether it is the one or the other.

I assume you have provided your daughter's teacher with the reports from the OT as well as Bergit? From your post, I am not certain how long your daughter has been with her OT or when the diagnosis of SID was made; if it is within this year, I suggest giving her current treatment a chance (at least 6 months). If absolutely no improvement is evident, then a second opinion is in order. I am sure the teacher understands that these treatments take time before the benefits can be seen.

An educational psychologist would be the best professional to see for a comprehensive assessment - I do wonder why the teacher has suggested IQ and play therapy? Please contact the Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Support group of Southern Africa (ADHASA)at www.adhasa.co.za/ or (011) 888 7655 for a medical professional in your area who is well experienced with ADHD.

All the best,
Delia
