Q.

ADHD SPECIALIST IN PTA

My daughter (almost 5) has ADHD according to the clynical psychologist. She is impossible to handle. Refuses to obey any instructions, thorows constant tantrums etc.According to the psychologist, she is not capable of managing her emotions. She is on Omega 3 & 6, but it does not help. The psychologist is of the opinion that she should go on Ritalin. I'm a bit scared, as she is so young. I wanted to take her to a pediatrician in Pta who also has 3 ADHD kids, but cannot afford her fee as the 1st consultation is not medical aid rates. Could you perhaps suggest a specialist/doctor in Pta that is really knowledgeable about ADHD?

Dear desperate mum,
Ritalin has helped many children, however it is not the only medication available; Concerta and Stratera are also often recommended as they tend to have fewer side effects. Your GP or Paediatrician will be in a better position to refer you to a specialist in your area. Working together with a dietician may also be beneficial as some foods can have a large impact on behaviour.
Kind regards.

I was diagnosed with adhd as a child by a specialist in Durban and was prescribed medication. I was on the medication rite through my childhood. As an adult I have struggled with depression, fear, ocd etc now I'm in my 40's and getting to a point where I'm getting to the point where I just cannot deal with the depression and constant turmoil in my mind but cannot afford a psychiatrist. Where do I run to. There is just no one it seems that can help.

My son is 9 years old and he is ADHD. I take him to a pedriatic neurologist every 6 months for his check ups and this Dr is excellent. It is Dr MM Lipperd at Unitas hospital. He is very straight forward and take no nonsense and very good with the kids. My son loves going to him and he will never put the child on medication if not nessecary. Good luck, I know it is not always easy for you or the child.
