At what age can they test to see if the child is just very active or if it is ADD/ADHD? His older brother is already on Ritalin for it.

Dear Arnel,

There is much controversy over the minimum age for diagnosis; the consensus is that the symptoms must be present for a minimum of 6 months in at least 2 different environments. AD/HD does have a genetic component; if one of your son's has been correctly diagnosed there may be a tendency toward AD/HD in the family.

Please contact the Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Support group of Southern Africa (ADHASA)at www.adhasa.co.za/(011) 888 7655 for a professional in your area; providing them with the age of your son will ensure a more accurate referral - you ideally want someone who specialises or regularly deals with young children.

Good luck,
Delia
