Q.

ADD diagnosis and violence

My 7 year old nephew has been diagnosed with ADD and post traumatic stress. He is very violent towards animals and other kids. He also still wets his bed.

They have prescribed ritalin generic and a anti depressant.

Do you agree that the meds will take the violence etc away or should they also see a therapist?

Dear Worried,

If he has been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, some therapy is suggested to help him deal with whatever happened. If the bed wetting can be related to the traumatic event then therapy would be better suited to overcoming the trauma.

Bed wetting is associated with ADHD, however, with clear boundaries and routines, and a reward system for good behaviour it can be overcome.

Kind regards,
Delia
