29yr. brother has ADD &  depression

Hi dr. My brother has suffered from ADHD when he was a baby. He was unable to complete school due to the symptoms. He is a wonderful person but my mother can not cope with his mood swings (agression &  depression). He is currently seeing a church counselor but not taking any medication due to my mothers financial situation. My brothers has tried several jobs but people are generally impatient to teach him or under-pay him. Are the Solar products for eg. ' Natural high'  (which contains seratonin)any good &  safe? Is Cilift (anti-anxiety) maybe an option? I know Omega 3 is supposed to help with the brain function. Could you advise a suitable medical practioner in Cape Town?PLEASE HELP.

Dear Ariel,
There are a number of products on the market which aim to assist with concentration and anxiety; as every person is different what works for one may not work for another; furthermore, without knowing his medical history it is not advisable to make any recommendations. Having said this, if your brother has been diagnosed with depression it is unlikely that a supplement will have the effect you are expecting. I am aware that some medications can be very costly; in instances like this it may be beneficial for him to get a script from his doctor and have it filled at your government hospital. Please go to to find a practitioner in your area.
Kind regards.
