Much of David’s working day is taken up with sitting either at meetings or at a desk. Mike is luckier as he gets to do site inspections and in this way moves around a lot more. But for most people, sitting in one place is what most working days are about.

Things to remember

We were not made to sit in one place all day. It is important to get up from your desk at least once every hour – 90 minutes and move around a bit.

• If you are stuck in a meeting, take time out to go to the toilet.
• Do some stretching exercises to increase your circulation.
• Be mindful of how you are sitting. If you slouch forward instead of sitting up straight, you could get lower back pain before long.
• If your chair is uncomfortable and it doesn’t look as if your boss wants to buy new office furniture, take your own chair. It is a lot cheaper to do this than it is to treat back problems.
