If you – like many other South Africans – own a firearm, consider keeping your gun locked up or unloaded. Doing these things can lower the odds that a child or teenager will accidentally injure themselves or others with the gun, or use it to commit suicide. According to the Child Accident Prevention Foundation, about 800 South African children die annually from gunshot wounds.

Take action:
If you own a gun, always make sure that you keep the gun locked; store the gun unloaded; lock up the ammunition; and store the gun and ammunition separately. Also consider investing in a lock box with a push button lock that can be accessed quickly in case of an emergency.
