Beware the fungi that lurk in public showers and on swimming pool surfaces. You could be stuck with a nasty fungal foot infection, such as athlete's foot. Signs to look out for include itching, burning, redness, and stinging on the soles of the feet. The skin may also flake, peel, blister or crack.

Take action: Keep the skin on your feet clean and dry; when you're at home, take your shoes off and expose your feet to fresh air; change your socks every day; dry your feet carefully after using a public shower; and avoid walking barefoot in public areas.
