| Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in South Africa and affects people of all ages and races. The scary fact is that you only need three blistering sunburns in your lifetime to greatly increase your chances of developing the disease.
However, the good news is that it's a visible form of cancer that can be detected and treated early – if you know what to look out for. The pictures in this guide will give you a good idea of what dangerous melanoma lesions look like. This type of skin cancer occurs most frequently in young people between the ages of 20 and 40.
Remember that it's important to have a regular skin check, especially if you're in a high-risk group. Risk factors for melanoma include:
- having more than 50 moles on your body;
- the presence of irregular moles;
- a family history of melanoma; and
- previous sunburn.
