Quick advice for a life in the fast lane

We could give a tome, full of wise advice, on living long and well. But who’s got the time? Here are some things you need to know quickly about two things that count: having muscled arms and not getting cancer.

You want big arms:
Your biceps are quite something. Not just yours, you man-mountain, but blokes’ in the general. They can take quite a lot of pounding from a set of dumbbells before they grow. Solution?

1. Try a combination of a dip and hanging knee raise, plus some moves with a pair of dumbbells. It’ll work your arms – especially your triceps - and your abs. Start at your gym’s dip station (that’s different to the dip tank you find down on the farm). Grab the parallel bars and lift yourself until your arms are straight. Keep your legs straight and your feet together. Now bend your elbows and lower your body until you’re hanging with your feet still off the ground and your upper arms parallel to the ground. Now push yourself back up until your elbows straighten and with one smooth move, lift your knees up.

Without using momentum to do the lift (it’s your muscles you’re working), round your back until your knees meet your chest. Hold to the count of five and repeat to failure.

2. Grab a set of dumbbells and hold them at your side, palms facing forward. Now lift them in the standard move, keeping your elbows at your side. But raise them slowly. If you struggle to do thee sets of 10, you’re using the right weight. Opt for heavy weights and fewer reps.

3. Immediately after this, turn the dumbbells so that your palms are facing inwards. Now lift the weights in what some blokes call a hammer curl. Lift until they touch your shoulders. Do three sets of 10 or to failure.

Take care of your nether regions
That’s the arms taken care of, but what about that little walnut-sized organ down in your nether regions, called the prostate?

It doesn’t make much of a fuss until it goes wrong. Then it can cause a world of pain and discomfort. So how do you keep it happy?

  • Glove up: Gonorrhoea can be treated, but it can increase your chances of developing prostate cancer later in life. So don that condom.
  • Have sex: A study of 29 000 men in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that men who ejaculate 21 times or more each month were 33 percent less likely to develop prostate trouble than men who ejaculated fewer than seven times a month. Good news, men.

    Other tips to prevent cancer

Nosh nuts: Foods rich in vitamin E, like almonds, appear to help prevent colon cancer. Beans and peas have plenty of it too.

Drink steadily: Make that slowly but steadily. You already know that red wine contains some things that are good for you. It also seems that moderate drinking lowers the chances of prostate cancer, but binge drinking significantly increases the chances, according to a study conducted by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Maryland, USA.

Get checked out: This isn’t fun, but if you’re over 30 it’s time your GP did his thing with the surgical glove. At least it’s over quickly. - (William Smook)
