Your wife is ill, the freezer is empty, the kids are hungry and home-delivered take-aways are going to break the bank, especially as it is the end of the month and there is still much month left at the end of the money.

You tend to avoid the kitchen as a rule. The last time you tried something adventurous in the kitchen, the ceiling had to be repainted. So what now? Will this be the night which will give your kids the opportunity to tell their children one day that they sometimes went to bed hungry?

Basic recipe against disaster

Ingredients

• 1 packet of diced bacon
• 1 tin of Mexican tomatoes
• packet of macaroni
• 1 large spoon of flour
• Half a cup of milk

Five easy steps

Macaroni

1. Boil water in a kettle.
2. Pour it into a pot.
3. Set the stove on high and put in the macaroni.
4. Add a bit of salt.
5. Let it boil for 10 – 12 minutes.
6. Strain the water off.

The sauce

7. Put the bacon in a pan over moderate heat. Stir to separate the pieces.
8. After about 10 minutes, add the tin of tomatoes.
9. When it is boiling, add the flour. Stir.
10. After a minute or so, add the milk.

Put the macaroni in a bowl. Put the sauce on top. If you are feeling flamboyant, add a bit of grated cheese on top. Supper’s ready!
