Great idea if you don't mind the stares

If you want to avoid athlete's foot, you can do the usual things, such as keeping your feet dry. Or, you can wear woollen socks whenever you shower at the gym.

According to the March 2000 issue of the Japanese language journal Nippon Ishinkin Gakkai Zasshi, researchers from the dermatology department at Tokyo Medical and Dental University had volunteers walk on infected bathmats while wearing cotton socks, nylon stockings and woollen socks.

The fungi passed through the cotton and nylon fabrics but were stopped by the wool.

The researchers didn't say it, but there's another advantage to wearing woollen socks in the shower. People will spend so much time commenting on your feet, they'll never have an unkind word to say about the rest of your body.
