Make sure you have the right equipment – a brick instead of a hammer, or a knife instead of a screwdriver just won't do; call in the professionals if you don't have the right equipment; serious back injuries can result from falling off ladders – put them on a flat surface, don't lean to one side, and get someone to hold it; don't smoke while you're working, as many of the materials, such as paint stripper, can be highly flammable; wear a mask if the area you're working in is dusty, as this will protect your lungs; and remember to switch off the power before doing electrical repairs.
