Pop legend Sir Elton John, who claims to own 4 000 pairs of glasses, is planning to auction them after he undergoes corrective laser eye surgery in February.
I can't see anything, so why wait?" he told a British television audience this week.

The most common laser procedure, known as LASIK, allows people to ditch their glasses or contact lenses by permanently changing the shape of the cornea - the clear covering of the front of the eye.
Most people who benefit from laser eye surgery are younger than 45 years. People younger than forty usually suffer from nearsightedness, and people older than forty from farsightedness. Correcting nearsightedness with laser eye surgery does not guarantee no glasses for farsightedness in your forties and beyond.
In older the people - and Sir Elton will fall in this category - the shape of the eyeball and the elasticity of the eye muscles (contracting and relaxing to adapt the change of the eyeball to focus) are not what it used to be. In older people it is harder to predict the exact longterm outcome of this corrective eye surgery.
It may be wise for Sir Elton to hold on to at least a pair of two of his more than 4000 pairs of glasses.
