Chipped or broken tooth

First aid for a chipped or broken tooth while you wait to see the dentist.

If the chip is just a small corner of the tooth, your tooth is in no immediate danger. Have the tooth restored as soon as possible to avoid decay starting on the open surface.

However, if a large piece is broken, and the tooth is now sensitive, use warm water and try to rinse out as much dirt as possible. Use a cold compress on the outside of your mouth or cheeks to keep the swelling down. See a dentist immediately.
