Get fresh breath

accreditation
According to experts, 95% of people will suffer from bad breath. The bacteria that cause bad breath and gum disease can be transferred from mouth to mouth when we exchange a kiss.

“The best way to keep your breath fresh and your gums healthy is by following an effective daily oral hygiene routine” says oral hygienist Vicky Gowar.

Gowar advises that no single technique is sufficient. “Brushing on its own will only remove 50% of plaque,” she warns.

For those of you who want to kiss with confidence, Gowar recommends a three-step oral health programme:

  • Brush: Brush twice a day, after breakfast and last thing at night. It should take two to four minutes to brush properly, using a circular motion. Hold the brush at a 45 degree angle to clean below the gum line. Don’t forget to brush the back of the tongue, as this is where bacteria and food accumulate and decay if not removed. You can scrape the tongue clean with your toothbrush, or use a tongue cleaner specifically designed to do this job.
  • Floss: Ninety percent of dental problems start between the teeth, so flossing is absolutely essential, yet only about 30% of people floss on a daily basis. Use dental floss, dental tape or new GUM Soft Picks, all of which are designed to remove plaque from between teeth without damaging the gums. Your gums may bleed a little at first, especially if you haven’t flossed for a long time. If bleeding persists or is accompanied by pain or swelling, visit your dentist or oral hygienist.
  • Rinse: Rinsing with a mouthwash can reach places brushing can’t, and is particularly helpful for people who suffer from smelly breath.

Gowar says that you should ideally see a dentist and oral hygienist twice a year for a thorough check-up, clean and expert advice.
