Here's a grim thought to wake you up on a Monday morning: the average office desk has about 400 times more bacteria than the average toilet seat in a workplace restroom, according to new research. What's more, women's desks tend to be a lot dirtier than men's.

Take action:
Try not to eat while you're sitting at your desk – if you do, use a plate and have a serviette handy; buy a pack of disinfectant "wet wipes" and keep it in your drawer – wipe your desk once a day; ask the cleaners to clean your desk with a good disinfectant every week – just make sure they don't damage your computer equipment; and wash your hands a few times during the day – particularly after visiting the loo or eating.
