Check the chicken

For many South Africans, chicken forms an integral part of the diet. Unfortunately, chicken is often implicated in food poisoning incidents. Know how to shop for top-quality poultry.

Take action:
Make the grocery store your last stop before going home; select fresh chicken just before checking out at the register; make sure that the chicken feels cold to the touch; avoid poultry with damaged wrappings – exposure to air through damaged wrapping dehydrates the meat and impairs the quality; plump, meaty bodies and clean skin, free of bruises, broken bones, feathers, cuts and discolouration are good quality attributes; put packets of chicken in disposable plastic bags to contain any leakage that could cross-contaminate other foods.
