Day 20 of Life 2 the Limit

Two-thirds of the way through, and apart from a sugar hangover from yesterday’s junk food binge, the five remaining islanders seem pretty chilled.

On Day 20, officially two-thirds of the way through, the five remaining islanders seem quieter, calmer and confident of seeing this adventure out.

They don’t seem to be missing the five who left. Maya says: ‘You might think that axing the group in half yesterday would have made the rest of the group scared. However, the truth is that I find the vibe as nice, if not nicer. There is no more talk about who is leaving, when and so on, and there is a more peaceful atmosphere, with less speculation. I actually prefer it.’

And Joe is delighted that he has fewer potential patients to worry about. ‘I’m certainly less busy than I was, with fewer medical jobs and less water needing to be pumped.’

But judging by lots of video footage of Joe and Nick trying to start a fire in damp weather (I’ve edited most of it out), they might be missing Matt, the legendary fire-starter, just a bit!

And there’s another hangover from yesterday’s food feast: Huenu had to sleep off a sugar high that left her feeling a bit drunk, while Saul is reeling and a bit sugar mad: ‘For 19 days I ate only what I collected and caught myself. Fish for breakfast and supper, nuts, lizards, oysters, unripe bananas etc.

‘Now I’ve injected myself with a hit of sugar and I’m a raving addict, trapped spinning like a sugar rat on the wheel of my thoughts.’

With all of them passing the time inside their own heads – and writing about it – it’s hard to figure out from their journals exactly what they’re up to. But, I suspect there’s not a lot more than lying around on a tropical beach going on!
