Dad-to-be: 38 weeks

What’s going on:
The baby is bigger and heavier. This translates effectively into a deflated self-image on the part of your partner. How she’s feeling:
Fat. Bloated. Paranoid about hurting, poisoning or squashing the baby. She’s feeling flushed with pride at being a mother-to-be, but filled with trepidation at the coming Labour Day ordeal. How you’re feeling:
Nervous. You’ve rehearsed all the moves, the bag is packed and all you can really do now is wait, right? Well, not really.

If you do have some time on your hands, do some of the odd jobs that have been neglected while you frantically visited all the hospitals, gynaecologists, pharmacies and pre-natal classes in a 20-mile radius.

Consider this: when the baby arrives and for several months afterwards, there’ll be very little time for doing DIY work. If you have a few minutes, use them.

You should also use his time to rub your partner’s back. Nearly all women experience back pain during pregnancy. You can fashion a simple but effective gadget by putting two tennis balls in a stocking. Place this high tech device at the base of her spine and roll it upwards, with one ball on either side of the spine. You’ll achieve much the same success using massage oils.
