Shaving doesn't have to be a pain. For the smoothest shave ever, try these excellent products...

Edwin Jagger Premium Shaving Cream in Sandalwood, R180.00 for a 75ml tube

Reviewer: Wimpie Engelbrecht, construction project manager

This product is amazing! I usually have to shave twice before I get a proper shave. This time I had a satisfactory result after only one shave. The sandalwood smell is beautiful and it left my skin feeling soft and supple. With previous creams my skin felt taut and dry. Not with this one. My skin felt clean, "cool", refreshed and nourished. Enhanced by natural extracts, the product consists of 99% natural components and is free of parabens, mineral oil, paraffin and other synthetic substances. This shaving cream is also available in Aloe Vera and Sea Buckthorn. Edwin Jagger products are available for purchase online at www.luxury-grooming.co.za.

King of Shaves Azor Razor, R74.99 (four replacement cartridges: R65.99)
Reviewer: Andreas Späth, Health24 ManZone

A razor is a razor is a razor, right?! Ok, they can come with one, two, three, four or 27 parallel blades and may or may not have one of those lubricating strips, but in the end they’re all basically the same, right?! Well that’s what I thought until I tried the Azor from King of Shaves, a UK-based grooming products company I’d never even heard of before. The Azor has got four blades and looks a little odd with its wishbone shape, but what makes it really different is that the head is really bendy and flexible courtesy of two little rubbery joints. I didn’t think that that was going to have a huge effect, but actually it makes for quite a unique shaving experience. The razor is much more responsive to the contours of your face, it hugs it the surface and honestly slides across it more smoothly than ordinary razors. I really liked using the Azor and what’s more, it comes at a reasonable price, as do the replacement cartridges.

Babor Men Ultra Comfort Shaving Foam, R280.00
Reviewer: Andreas Späth, freelance journalist

This is the Rolls Royce of shaving creams! It has the creamy consistency of a perfect white chocolate mousse (yes, I did have to resist the temptation to taste it) and gives you a perfectly smooth and effortless shave. A little goes a long way and to top it all, it smells really great. At least that’s what my wife says! I have quite sensitive skin, but with this shaving foam, a decent razor and a good after-shave balm (LINK TO http://www.health24.com/Man/Your_body/748-2923-4445-3019-4466,52636.asp), I’ve actually been enjoying shaving lately. Apparently the active agent complex in this product, called Taurec, consists of hops, taurine and Siberian ginseng and it eases minor cuts and revitalizes the skin. All I can say is shaving has never been as comfortable and enjoyable. With this stuff, I’ve kissed that just-shaved irritable skin feeling good bye for good.

Vichy Homme Sensi-Baume Ca, R160.00
Reviewer: Andreas Späth, freelance journalist

I’ll be honest, shaving isn’t my favourite past-time. I usually only do it when I absolutely have to. I have quite sensitive skin and shaving usually leaves me with an irritated, splotchy, itchy and tight face that makes the whole experience rather uncomfortable. I’ve been using Vichy Homme Sensi-Baume Ca for about a month now - don’t ask me about the name, but it’s described as a “comfort balm for sensitive skin” - and it’s made a real difference. A small bead of the pearly white lotion spreads easily over the entire shaved area of the face and is absorbed quickly without being greasy. The fragrance is pleasant but understated and will not interfere with your normal eau de toilette, aftershave or deodorant. The product is alcohol-free, allergy-tested and contains “dermo-assimilable calcium” which apparently acts as a skin repairer and protector. Most importantly for me, the balm really soothes the skin after a shave - no more itching or irritated skin. I quite enjoy shaving these days!

Body Shop Maca Root Shave Cream, R80.00
Reviewer: Juann-Pierre Strauss, Health24 IT guru

I must confess that I usually don't care too much for the hype around ‘All New Shaving Creams’, but this time I was pleasantly surprised. Being a bit curious, I read up on this strange thing called the Maca Root and apparently it infused the soldiers of the Andes with so much zest that they had to be kept away from the women for days after eating it. So obviously this was going to do wonders for my skin. It didn't disappoint at all. The clean, organic aroma and refreshing chill one gets when applying this shaving cream really makes for a great start to your day and as a bonus it actually does what it says, i.e. moisturise your skin. It was great to not have a rash after shaving for once. My girlfriend loved it, and that's all the approval I need.
