12 easy ways to spring clean your health

We tend to spend the winter months indoors, cosying up in front of a fire or indulging in delicious comfort foods, but now that spring is here, you may be looking to make a few changes to your lifestyle.


They say a change is as good as a holiday, and we agree. Here are 12 easy ways to spring clean your body, refresh your mind and boost your general health:

1. Clear out and reorganise your pantry

During winter we tend to favour comfort food to keep us warm. But in spring we need to remove these temptations from our pantry – if you don’t have unhealthy food in the house, you won’t be tempted to eat it. Reorganising your pantry also helps you to plan healthy meals in advance.

2. Increase your steps

Research shows that 10 000 is the magic number when it comes to daily steps. By walking more, you’ll not only get valuable exercise, but also give your cardiovascular system a boost. 

3. Get your annual medical check-up 

We all know how important it is to get that general check-up, Pap smear or prostate exam. But often we postpone these important doctor’s visits, and spring is the ideal time to get a clean bill of health. Early diagnosis is important in a lot of conditions, and screening can identify potentially life-threatening conditions. 

4. Eat more fruit

There’s a lot of research that shows eating enough fruit reduces your risk for heart disease, including heart attack and stroke. Make sure you eat a variety of fruits, as each contains its own specific nutrients. 


5. Visit a dietitian

Visiting a dietitian can be one of the best things you can do for your health. Dietitians can help you eat smarter, get rid of excess weight and help you to manage diabetes, cardiovascular problems or high blood pressure. 

6. Allergy-proof your house

Spring is usually the time when allergies start to surface and a lot of dust can gather during winter. Change your bedding, dust behind that cabinet and vacuum your carpets properly. Several things such as mould and pet dander can also cause allergies, so a good thorough clean might be a good idea. 

7. Try a new kind of exercise

We often get stuck in a rut, and besides not exercising during winter we tend to follow the same exercise routine year after year. Now is your chance to try a new kind of exercise. It will not only lift your mood, but might even target different muscle groups.

8. Take a holiday

Taking a break at the start of spring might make you feel refreshed and ready to tackle the last few months of the year. Even a short holiday, whisking yourself away from the everyday hustle and bustle can replenish your energy reserves. 

9. Cut down on TV time

During winter we tend to spend too much time watching TV. Spring is the ideal time to get up from the couch and get involved in outdoors activities like hiking, adventure sports etc. 

10. Start a new hobby

Research suggests starting a new hobby is not only a fun way to keep you occupied, but also expands your skills and creativity. Choose something you have a passion for, as it will not only lift your mood, but also expand your horizons. 

11. Take a multivitamin

Most people have very busy lives, and getting the appropriate amounts of vitamins and minerals from our diets might be a challenge. Taking a multivitamin will help you to fill any nutritional gaps. 

12. Go organic

It might sound like a lot of extra trouble, but organic foods contain more beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants. Organic foods are produced with fewer pesticides than their conventionally grown counterparts. Many people with food allergies have fewer symptoms when they switch to organic foods.
