Chronic exposure to sunlight, a family history of melanoma, fair skin, the use of tanning devices and severe sunburns – these increase the risk of melanoma. Children are very vulnerable and childhood sunburn is another factor that increases the melanoma risk. How to protect yourself and the kids:
- Cover sun exposed areas of skin with SPF 30 in direct sunlight and SPF 8 under cover of clothes, and reapply after swimming as it becomes diluted.
- Wear wide brim hats and protective clothing, and be sure to wear light-reflecting colours.
- Stay out of the sun between 09h00 and 16h00 in summer, and take extra care on overcast days when the ozone layer is at its thinnest and sun rays are more penetrating.
