Dettol disinfectant liquid recalled

accreditation

According to reports, Dettol Disinfectant Liquid  and Domestos Extended Germ Kill have been recalled because it may pose a health risk to consumers, the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) said on Tuesday.

Thomas Madzivhe, General Manager for Chemicals and Materials at the NRCS confirmed that Dettol Disinfectant Liquid had indeed been recalled as it had failed factory tests and did not pass the required tests. He added that Domestos Extended Germ Kill had not been registered with the NRCS and as such they could not guarantee its safety, which is why it had been recalled.

The product under recall by NCRS is illegally imported into SA by a third party trader which has nothing to do with Dettol South Africa, according to a press release from the company.

"It fails to meet our requirements, and as such we urge the public not to use the product," Madzivhe said. "In instances where the safety and health of consumers may be affected, we issue a consumer alert to say such a product is under recall and it's not advisable for you to use it. We issue a specific number [on any product] to indicate that it meets our requirements and is safe for use. This product has not met such requirements."

Compulsory specification

Madzivhe said the regulator could not ascertain the disinfectant's compliance with safety standards.

Earlier this year in April, the NRCS denied that it would be recalling Dettol and Domestos products in a report on Fin24. In the statement they issued at the time, Maroela Media reported that an NRCS spokesperson said the company was "worried about certain imported Dettol and Domestos products, and that they were considering recalling the products countrywide".

The recall did not affect Domestos Thick Bleach and other products in the Dettol range, including Dettol Hygiene Liquid and Dettol Antiseptic Liquid.

The NRCS is an agency of the Department of Trade and Industry established to administer compulsory specifications and other technical regulations.

According to the report, the imported products did not comply with the compulsory specification for disinfectants as administered by the NRCS.

NRCS acting CEO Bongani Khanyile urged the public to notify the regulator about any shops still selling Dettol Disinfectant Liquid and Domestos Extended Germ-Kill. They can be contacted on 021 428 6043.
