The bicycle: King of the Road

The bicycle: most energy-efficient mode of transport and king of the short-distance commute, yet each year after the Argus those 35 000 bikes seem to vanish off our streets.

The bicycle is the most energy-efficient mode of transport and undisputed king of the short-distance commute, yet each year after the Argus those 35 000 bikes seem to vaporise off our streets.

Incorporating cycling into urban transport makes a major dent in air pollution and carbon emissions. Start small and do a little planning beforehand:

  • Spin down to the corner cafe or video rental once in a while, instead of getting the gas-guzzling hulk out.
  • Drive part of the way to work then switch to two wheels. Find out if there are bike-and-ride options in your area.
  • Do a practice cycle on the weekend to see how long it takes to get to work that way (you may be pleasantly surprised).
  • Take a fresh change of clothes (or keep them at work) to change into.
  • Alternatively, if your trip is short and not too strenuous, have a shower just before you cycle in and then freshen up with a washcloth.
  • Formally request that your workplace, local mall, bus or train station have secure lock-ups where you can leave your bike.
