Fish is a healthy food choice, but check you're not about to eat an over-fished species. Find out instantly which seafood is ocean-friendly with your cell phone.

SMS the species name to the FishMS service at 079 499 8795, and you'll get a texted reply as to whether it is on the "Green", "Orange" or "Red" list. Or, if your phone has internet access, enter the species name on the South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) mobi site.

  • Green - OK to eat. These are the most sustainable choices.
  • Orange - Avoid, or eat only rarely. Stocks are under pressure, but it's still legal to catch these species.
  • Red - Never eat. Severely over-fished, and some are illegal to catch or sell.

Browse the SASSI website too for lots more information on sustainable fish and other seafood choices, and responsible restaurants and retailers.
