Is Renee Zellweger lying about plastic surgery?

Renee Zellweger is a real American sweetheart.

The actress, who shot to fame in her role in Bridget Jones, is loved the world over not only for her talent and sweet personality, but also, until recently, for her charming, unique and pixie-like facial features.

On Monday 20 October the world gasped as a completely changed Renee stepped out at the ELLE Women in Hollywood Awards in Beverly Hills, Channel24 reported.

The media was abuzz with accusations that she had gone under the knife - gone where her high cheekbones that pinched her blue eyes into small almond shapes and instead her eyes where wide open, giving her a distinctly 'normal', almost housewifely appearance.

Her face, once cutely 'chubby-cheeked', had changed to a distinctly average oval shape.

In fact, the only recognizable feature of her face was her beautiful mouth.

The actress vehemently denies having had plastic surgery to any part of her face and, according to PEOPLE magazine, she ascribes her brand new look to a healthier diet and taking much better care of herself.

Did she, or didn't she have plastic surgery?

We asked a well-known Cape Town plastic surgeon (who is in academic practice and requested to remain anonymous for professional reasons) whether he thought she had gone under the knife.

He said: "If you look at Renee’s metamorphosis across timelines, she has most definitely had work done."

"Virtually all actresses have at least had botox and/or filler treatment. The latter can make a substantial change to your face."

Looking at photographs of the actress spanning the last decade, the surgeon is convinced Zellweger has undergone a number of plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures in the last two or three years

According to the surgeon, when considering all facets of her "new" face, the following factors may have played a role in the actress's altered appearance:

•    Weight loss
•    Different make-up
•    Rejuvenating eye surgery, resulting in narrower eye apertures
•    Botox and fillers – presumably ongoing
•    Rhinoplasty, most likely before 2012

He says "She's also had blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) and has had 'improved tip projection' to her nose.

This is conventionally done with rhinoplasty, but in experienced hands it can be achieved temporarily with filler."

What is blepharoplasty?

This is the answer if you (almost) magically want to get rid of bags under the eyes, puffiness or droopy eyelids caused by stress, late night parties, work or your genes.

In some cases, the skin of the eyelids may appear to be stretched, and in bad cases it can appear as if the skin of the eyelid is almost hanging over the eye.

By removing this excess fat and skin from the upper and lower eyelids, the shape of the eye is redefined to make your appearance much more alert and youthful.

Through incisions made around the eye area, the surgeon separates the skin from underlying fatty tissue and muscle, removes excess fat and often sagging skin, while only trimming the muscle.

This procedure will not remove crow’s feet or eliminate dark circles under your eyes. It will also not lift sagging eyebrows.

The average length of the procedure is one to three hours. Eyelids may feel tight or sore for a short while after surgery and some bruising will be evident for a couple of days.

While Renee will always remain Renee, we do miss her unique, endearing looks. What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments below.
