  • The most strokes on a single hole in a US PGA event is 23 by Tommy Armour in the 1927 Shawnee Open.
  • Through July 2001, Tiger oods has the current record for consecutive cuts made on the US PGA - 73. The next best are Vijay Singh on 21 and Hal Sutton on 20. From there it drops to Paul Azinger and David Duval on 11. Woods has also never missed a major cut as a professional.
  • Sergio Garcia, at 19 years and 258 days, became the youngest ever Ryder Cup player when he turned out for Europe against the US at Brookline, Massachussetts, in September 1999, the 33rd edition of this biennial event.
  • In 1986 Greg Norman led going into the final round of every major, but only won one - the British Open.
  • SA's Retief Goosen, 32, has a more remarkable story than his 2001 US Open win. When he was 17-years-old he was struck by lighting whilst on a golf course and the resulting health problems kept him out of the game for several months. According to his mother, he was left completely naked by the strike as it burnt all his clothing off, including his shoes.
  • Through July 2001 on the US PGA Tour, Casey Martin, who requires a cart to transport him around the course due to a painful circulatory disorder in his right leg, has the longest officially recorded drive of the year - 409 yards. He is only 36th on the average drive distance. John Daly has the longest average at 302.6 yards, but is ranked 192nd on driving accuracy. Tiger Woods is tied sixth for average driving distance, while Ernie Els is way down at 71.
  • The oldest and youngest winners of the British Open make a rather unique pair - they are father and son. Old Tom Morris won the Championship at 46 years and 99 days old in 1867 and young Tom Morris, a year later, won it at just 17 years, five months and eight days old. By 1872 they had won four times each.
  • Ernie Els currently has the longest active winning streak on the US PGA Tour - he has won a tournament every year since 1994.
  • Through July 2001, Phil Mickelson leads the US Tour on average birdies per round, shooting 318 in 70 rounds for a 4.54 average. Tiger Woods is second on 4.48, notching up 251 in his 56 rounds.
  • Woods shot a 48 when he was just three years old - and 18 years later he became the world's youngest ever No 1 at 21 years and 24 weeks. He had been a professional for just 42 weeks.
