Bikram yoga

Also known as “hot yoga”, Bikram yoga is a particularly hardcore form of exercise that involves a 90-minute sequence of 26 Hatha-based yoga poses done in a heated room (up to 40 degrees Celsius).

You stretch, you strengthen, you get your heart rate up and you let go of stress – all in one session.

The posture exercises systematically moves fresh, oxygenated blood to every ligament, bone, tendon, cell, muscle, nerve and organ in your body, restoring all systems to healthy working order. The sequence has been specifically designed to give the entire body and mind a workout.

This form of exercise (which, incidentally, is practiced by celebs like Madonna, Beyonce Knowles, Gwyneth Paltrow and Shirley MacLaine) is the brainchild of Bikram Choudhury, a former weightlifter from Calcutta.

Bikram started off with one small studio in Los Angeles. Now, there are more than 850 Bikram yoga schools around the world, with a student following of more than 4 million.

The heat mimics the conditions in India – where yoga originates from – and allows the muscles to stretch to their full capacity. Bikram is said to burn around 640 calories per session. So, it can also help you to lose weight.

By working all the body’s organs, Bikram yoga can help prevent many illnesses and diseases. It can help with the following:

  • acne;
  • metabolic disorders;
  • depression;
  • obesity;
  • back pain; and
  • stress.

Yoga also decreases the signs of ageing as blood with fresh oxygen and nutrients is sent to the skin.
