Dear Karin
Xylitol is basically a carbohydrate that has a slightly lower energy value than standard carbs, e.g. xylitol provides 14 kJ per gram compared to 16 kJ per gram provided by sugar. It has the advantage that it does not promote tooth decay so that it is often used in chewing gum that is intended to prevent tooth decay.
