Wound infection

My father in had a hernia repaired 4 months ago. The wound
where the portovac was in is still draining pus (only on the one side, the other side healed). He had all kinds of infections - MRSA, etc in the wound and has been on all kinds of antibiotics.
Should he continue with the wound irrigations he is currently doing on a daily basis and wait until the wound heals. The doctor says it would be best to remove the prosthesis and then replace it in a few months.
