WINDOW PERIOD

Hi Doctor,

What is the window period for HIV testing if using the latest generation (I think 4th generation) ELISA test? Is it 4 to 6 weeks?

Thanx

Hallo Janice
The window period refers to the time it takes for the body to make Antibodies against HIV so would be the same with the 4th gen Elisa test. With current tests, about 50% of those who will test positive do so by 21 days after infection, 95% to 99% will test positive by three months after exposure.
