Our expert says:
Menstruation with its hormonal variations can influence your appetite a great deal. The reason why you are craving carbs is that there is a chemical in the brain called serotonin which makes you feel good when the levels are high and makes you feel miserable and depressed when the levels are low. Eating carbs increases the serotonin levels in the brain and improves the mood (a type of self-medication). Proteins also help to increase brain serotonin levels. So the trick is to eat low-GI carbs and low-fat proteins at every meal and when you get those hunger pangs have a fat-free yoghurt or fruit or 2 Pro-vitas, to tide you over and keep the serotonin high. When your hormone levels have settled down again after menstruation you can return to your stricter diet.
