Who to consult about my knees

Hi. I would like to find out who I can consult wrt my knees. They make this terrible grinding sound whenever I sit down, get up or do exercises. My right knee has also become painful when exercising. Should I consult my GP or go to visit an Orthopedist directly. My mother had 2 knee replacements and also suffer from arthritis, so I don' t know if it' s genetic.
