If the 13-year-old is doing his slimming programme under the supervision of a registered dietitian who has worked out his diet prescription for him to ensure that he does lose weight but still ingests all the nutrients he needs for normal, healthy growth, then it is fine to have a goal of losing 2 kg per month. Weightloss for very overweight youngsters is an excellent idea as long as they do not become deficient when using a weight reduction diet. Physical exercise is also vital. Encourage the lad to become as active as possible and as he loses weight and becomes more mobile he can increase how actively he exercises. A good goal to work towards is for him eventually to spend about one hour a day doing exercise or playing sport.
