weightloss in children

Is it a good idea for a 13 year old who is very overweight to have a goal of loosing 24kgs in 12 months? He is following a sensible eating plan and trying to cut portions and unnecessary carbs ie sweets. I just dont want him to try for something that is not a good idea.

Dear Lee
If the 13-year-old is doing his slimming programme under the supervision of a registered dietitian who has worked out his diet prescription for him to ensure that he does lose weight but still ingests all the nutrients he needs for normal, healthy growth, then it is fine to have a goal of losing 2 kg per month. If you have not yet consulted a dietitian, then please consider doing so. Visit the Association for Dietetics in SA Website at: www.adsa.org.za and click on "Find a Dietitian" to find a dietitian in your area. Weightloss for very overweight youngsters is an excellent idea as long as they do not become deficient when using a weight reduction diet. Physical exercise is also vital. Encourage the lad to become as active as possible and as he loses weight and becomes more mobile he can increase how actively he exercises. A good goal to work towards is for him eventually to spend about one hour a day doing exercise or playing sport.
Wishing you and the lad all the best
