Question
Posted by: janine laura | 2009/12/10

we have found the secondry cancer, not the primary

We have found secondary cancer in the lung, none in liver, pancreas, intestine or blood, what does this mean, if the secondary cancer is in the lung, does that mean the primary is the one that will be the end? Just need to understand. More tests are being done, but just do not understand what primary and secondry means.

If you could help it would be appreciated deeply.

Thank You
Sincerely
Janine

Hallo Janine
Primary cancer just mean that this is the source of the cancer and secondary means this is a metastasis (spreading) of the cancer. As an example: you can develop colon cancer and get metastasis to the lung. If they biopsy the tumour in the lung, the type of tissue they will find is colon tissue. Sometimes the primary cancer will cause death ( for instance if it is a tumor in the brain and it starts bleeding) and sometimes the secondary cancer can cause death (for instance if it causes liver failure)
