Dear Ntombi
Starvation diets where you eat nothing or so little that you are literally starving, do of course cause pronounced weightloss because you are not ingesting any energy and have to use up your body stores of fat. However, it is certainly not healthy to starve your body for long periods because this leads to serious deficiencies and ironically encourages the body's weightloss systems to shut down to try and preserve energy. That is of course exactly the opposite of what most people want. If this "water only" diet is only used for 1-2 days, it probably won't do too much harm, but anyone with blood sugar problems may find that they start passing out if they go for more than 6 hours without food. It is much better to use a sensible, well balanced diet and regular daily exercise to lose weight and re-educate yourself to eating the health low-fat, low-GI way.
