Dear Louise
Helping children like your son of 12 years to lose weight should be done under the supervision of a registered dietitian (visit the Association for Dietetics in SA Website at: www.adsa.org.za and click on "Find a Dietitian" to find a dietitian in your area). The dietitian will ensure that your son starts to lose weight while still ingesting all the nutrients he requires for good health and normal growth. The second important factor is to encourage your son to be as active as possible. Join him on walks, take him swimming, see if he can participate in a sport or if necessary enrol him at a gym. He should be doing at least 1 hour of physical activity a day, rather than watching TV or playing computer games.
Best regards
