Vaginal changes

Hi, why does a woman' s vaginal (external tissues) change after birth? I was 21 when I gave birth (natural) to my firstborn. However, shortly after and lots of itching the exrternal parts / outer skins of my vagina became enlarged and actually protrude from the lips. I Had no infections as I was bathing in Savlon for about two weeks after birth to keep the stitches clean and the wound hygenic.
THis has bothered me for many years, but I have been too embarassed to ask anybody.
