Unpaid notice period

I worked for my company 4 3yrs and got a new job. I gave them 4 weeks notice and they told me that I can go no need to work notice period. I asked if I will be paid for not working notice period and they say no. Here I am sitting at home 4 the whole month with no salary expectation. Is this allowed according to the law?

RE: UNPAID NOTICE PERIOD

You must get paid for your notice, if they didn't want you at work that's their problem. You are entitled to be paid.
