Tuberculosis

Dear Doctor
We have just discovered that the daughter of one of our staff members has been diagnosed with TB at her clinic in Soweto. however they have sent her home with only painkillers and no treatment, as none is available. She has recently given birth and we are worried her baby and family will be compromised.

Where can we buy the treatment and which organisation can we turn to in order to help the patient and her family?

Hallo Lori
They often take a sputum sample if they suspect the patient may have TB to send to the lab for culture and then the patient needs to go back after a few weeks to get the result before they are put on treatment. Just find out if this is what happened? The rest of the family can go to a local municipal clinic near you/their home for screening (just phone and find out which days they do TB screening - it is usually a mobile unit that comes round to do x/rays certain days of the month)
