Trouble falling asleep and frequent nightmares

My husband has problems falling asleep. When he does fall asleep he has nigthmares and wakes up in cold sweats, often screaming. This happens every night without fail unless he consumes alcohol. We don''t want him to become dependant on alcohol. Off the shelf sleeping pills do not help. What could be causing this? What should he do to seek help?

This sounds like an anxiety-related problem. You are quite correct that alcohol can be a problem in this kind of situation. He needs to discuss this with his doctor, who should be able to give him something to help relieve anxiety.
